Sharp Edge

Windsor 223/6

P.Huggins 62
R.Charters 54
Nash 6-53

Kidmore End 103

Windsor seconds stamped their authority on division 4b with a comprehensive victory over old adversaries Kidmore End at the Home Park on Saturday.

Batting first on a tricky wicket, Paul Huggins proved the corner stone of a resilient Windsor innings. Huggins stayed at the crease, whilst other less patient batsmen perished with Kidmore Ends Nash, proving to be the main assassin claiming a 6 wicket haul. With eyes firmly on reaching 200, the dismissal of Huggins saw Noble and Charters paired with only a few overs to get into the groove. Both batsmen settled quickly with big hitting Charters taking control smashing 54 as Windsor amassed an intimidating 223.

With a fine array of bowlers at his disposal, Skipper Edge played the role of the Sorcerors Apprentice as he changed the bowling round with stunning results. Edge and O'Shannassay set the standards with some fine aggressive bowling, they were followed by the fired up Endacott, the accuracy of Gould and the spin king Ashraf. All five shared the wickets aided by some inspired wicket-keeping by Rob Noble. Windsor wrapped up the game with kidmore End stranded on 103, 5 minutes before a rain shower would normally have brought a premature end to proceedings. Edge's lottery numbers are yet to be discovered, but 25 points are firmly in the bag.

RAIN DENIES MATTHEWS

Windsor 196-6 (37.2 Overs) vs Farnham Common
Rob Matthews 141 Not Out

MATCH ABANDONED DUE TO RAIN.

On a day when batting proved difficult for almost every other batsman in the Thames Valley League, Rob Matthews, making his debut for Windsor, made it look like a stroll in the park hitting an unbeaten 141 of Windsor's 196 before rain eventually got the better of the match forcing the game to be abandoned and denying Matthews not only of a probable 150 but the way he was batting a likely a double hundred. Matthews came to the crease at No.4 with Windsor in dire straight at 14-2 after Huggins and Wing had succumbed to the difficult conditions. However, making a mockery of the pitch and the conditions, Matthews soon got into his stride playing strokes all around the wicket with comparable ease. Matthews dominance of the game left the non strikers playing mere bit parts as he quickly reached his fifty with a drive through the covers before unbelievably getting too his century in even quicker time most notably by dispatching Farnham Commons captain Scott for a staggering 26 in one over which the analysis read 4,6,4,4,4,4. It was also during this time that the 6th wicket partnership between Matthews and Abdul Ashraf had reached fifty with Ashraf contributing zero runs!

The carnage continued with Matthews not giving a single chance out until steady drizzle turned heavy forcing the covers on and a torrential downpour putting paid to any chance of the match being completed and denying Matthews a chance of a possible place in the record books. Windsor now look forward to clash against Kidmore End at the Home Park next week on the back of two top order batsmen both with league centuries to their names this early on in the season.

High Wycombe 195-6 (Uphill 61)

Windsor 193 - 3 (Davis 109*)

ELEGANT DAVIS STROLLS WINDSOR TO VICTORY

Windsor 2nd XI got their season of to a victorious start after a comfortable win against High Wycombe last Saturday. After losing the toss and being asked to bowl on a surprisingly firm Ibstone wicket, openers Chris Edge and Australian Tristan O'Shannessy looked to make early breakthroughs, and this came as early as the third over with sharp fielding by newcomer Tim Smith actioning a run out as Windsor applied the pressure. There followed a period of consolidation by the High Wycombe captain Patten and the experienced Uphill. At the twenty over mark, at 60-1, High Wycombe looked to accelerate the scoring. However tight bowling by Wing and the rejuvenated Richard Endacott made sure that High Wycombe would never get away from Windsor, with wickets falling a regular intervals, and only some big hitting towards the end saw High fall just short of 200 runs.

Windsor's response came in the form of Paul Huggins and Brian Davis, both of who had scored heavily in pre season games. After a slow start against spin, both batsmen began to impose themselves on the Wycombe bowling with Huggins hitting two huge sixes and Davis playing some elegant drives and cuts to put Windsor in the driving seat. Davis passed his fifty with a drive through mid wicket and with the score on 96, Huggins sent a return catch back to the bowler to give Wycombe a glimmer of hope. This was all but extinguished however as Nigel Wing carried on where Huggins and left and with Davis got Windsor to within touching distance of the total. With rain clouds gathering Wing looked to finish the game early and was bowled and Tim Smith was caught at long on attempting the same shot. However, Davis after completing his maiden century to the delight of his teammates steered Windsor home to an impressive victory and one that they will look to build on at home to Farnham Common next week.

Workout shows encouraging signs

Windsor CC 189-7 (Gould 31, Wing 40, Charters 44)
Chalfont St Peter 112-8

Windsor 2nd will go into their league season unbeaten in pre-season friendlies after a comprehensive victory in a 40 over game against Chalfont St Peter. Inserted on a very damp track, Windsor knew that runs would be hard to come by. However, completely undaunted 16 year oldM ichael Gould set about the task with gusto, hitting 10 off the first two overs, to set Windsor off to a flier. With the watchful Rob Noble at the other end, the stage looked to be set until Gould was undone by the lack of pace in the wicket, top edging a ball to 1st slip. Noble departed soon afterc aught behind, but this brought the experienced Nigel Wing and Richard Charters to the crease and both worked singles and doubles almost at will,w hilst keeping a watchful eye on any balls misbehaving. With 10 overs to go the floodgates opened as Windsor accelerated the scoring. Richard Noble and Zishan Akbar sacrificed their wickets pushing the score along, but twos uperb cameo innings from Rob Dawson and Abdul Ashraf helped the score along to an impressive 189-7, which on the damp wicket would be an extremely difficult score to chase.

And so it proved for the Chalfont batsmen. Skipper Chris Edge opened the bowling with the rejuvenated Richard Endacott, and both were unlucky not to claimw ickets early on. Edge got the initial break through, trapping the openers LBW and sharp fielding by Ashraf and Endacott actioned a run out which effectively put the game out of Chalfont's reach. From then on Edger otated the bowling with the wickets being shared amongst the seven bowlersu sed, with Akbar and Dawson using the conditions to their advantage well. Chalfont never looked like getting the target and in the end were content to limp to 112-8 off their 40 overs.

The real test now starts next week for Windsor 2nd XI as they face a difficult trip to High Wycombe 3rd XI, a side who completed a comprehensive 'double' over them last season and so they will be looking to avenge those results and get what looks to be a promising season off to a good start.
